World Health Day - 7 April

Balanced and proper use of antibiotics to combat antibiotic

Inaction today - Lack of treatment tomorrow

Combating antimicrobial resistanceWhat is antimicrobial resistance; This is the resistance of microorganisms to antibiotics that were previously susceptible. This is usually a consequence of widespread use and particularly the abuse of these drugs. The resistance of bacteria to antibiotics is increasing with the wrong or irrational use of medicines, such as when:
  • misuse of antibiotics, or if the patient is taking antibiotics without medical prescription, or when the doctor prescribe antibiotics without proper indication
  • the patient receives lower doses than recommended or did not complete the treatment regimen.
In addition, travel and the easy movement of people and the development of trade around the world, allowing resistant bacteria to spread, with all the negative consequences this entails, all the earth with great speed, even a few hours.Nowadays people usually live longer and have better health than before. In what has largely contributed to the discovery of potent and effective drugs known as antimicrobials for the treatment of infectious diseases. Before the discovery and availability of antimicrobial drugs, which took place during the 1940's, people easily lose their lives due to infectious diseases. Today nobody can imagine a world without antibiotics. What are antimicrobial drugs; The antimicrobial drugs used to treat infections caused by the four groups of microorganisms: bacteria, fungi, parasites and viruses. The discovery of antimicrobial is one of the most important advances in health in the history of mankind, because he managed to reduce infectious diseases and save billions of lives during the past 11 years.Antimicrobial drugs include antibiotics, chemotherapeutic agents, antifungal, antiparasitic and antiviral agents. Also, you should know that antibiotics do not fight infections caused by viruses, but are effective only against bacterial infections. Now we are in dangerous place to lose valuable "arsenal" of antimicrobial drugs. The use and abuse in the treatment of humans and animals have increased the number and types of microorganisms that are resistant to them. As a result, patients remain longer infectious and may transmit resistant germs to others, thus causing more deaths, greater morbidity and disability and higher costs to provide care and health. The resistance of bacteria to antibiotics or antimicrobial resistance is not a new problem, but it is a problem that is becoming increasingly dangerous. If this phenomenon continues unchecked, many infectious diseases are likely to become uncontrollable, while derail progress in health around the world, which the United Nations has set a target to achieve by 2015.How do we combat antimicrobial resistance; Many countries are taking actions to combat antimicrobial resistance. This is not enough because these efforts should be coordinated so as to avoid a deterioration in pre-antibiotic era.To achieve this goal it is necessary to collective responsibility and action:
  • those who plan and decide on health policy
  • health care professionals, especially doctors who prescribe and pharmacists
  • the pharmaceutical industry
  • citizens and especially the patients.
That is why the World Health Organization calls everyone to take responsibility they deserve and to act in order to combat the resistance of bacteria to antibiotics. Therefore, it is our responsibility to safeguard the effectiveness of antibiotics, while combating the antibiotic. This will protect humanity, so as not to be faced with the nightmare of loss of life from pests, which are caused by the proliferation of more and more resistant microorganisms.
